At Kedron State High School we believe that involvement in school life beyond the classroom is an important contributing factor to connectedness to school culture. Kedron has many extra-curricular opportunities for students. The school offers a variety of activities, clubs and competitions in which students are encouraged to be involved. By doing so, students make positive connections with other students, staff and give back to the school community.

Music

Kedron's award-winning music program attracts highly talented students and those who are just beginning to learn. With a vast number of different ensembles to join at all different levels of ability, students are spoilt for choice when it comes to involvement in music. Further information can be found in our dedicated music page.

Student Council

Student voice in helping shape the strategic and operational direction of the school is highly valued at Kedron SHS. The Student Council forms an important avenue through which students can share their views with the school leadership team. Student Council representatives from all year levels are an active group of student leaders who work throughout the year in developing initiatives for Kedron SHS, and also perform an important role in fundraising for the school.

Chess

Kedron's Chess Club is an inclusive club for players of all skills. Each lunch break students grab the boards, learn with each other or engage in social competition. This year-long training in strategy and gamesmanship culminates in the annual Kedron Chess Competition where students from all year levels compete in different divisions in search of being crowned a Kedron Chess Champion.

Debating

Each year Kedron's highly successful debating program sees a number of teams take part in the Queensland Debating Union competition. Our dedicated coaching team and highly committed students see our debaters go from strength to strength with many teams making the finals each year. Debating is an excellent way to develop spoken persuasive skills, team work and agile thinking.

Interact

The Kedron SHS Interact Club is a school-based program for secondary school students which enables students to work collaboratively, set goals, and plan ways of offering service locally, nationally and internationally.  We are supported by the Nundah Rotary Club and a mentor Rotarian.  We were awarded the "Phillip Blakey Shield" for "Interact Club of the Year" in District 9600 in 2020.

Interact members:

  • conduct hands-on service projects
  • work together to benefit others
  • develop citizenship and leadership skills
  • show great respect for others
  • act to assist with local, national and international issues
  • choose their own projects and offer service to others
  • work with a local Rotary Club

Some activities include visits to aged care facilities (when Covid regulations permit) to meet, entertain and play bocce with elderly residents, visits to Queensland Children's Hospital and Ronald McDonald Houses where we take Easter eggs and spread good cheer to sick children at Easter.   We hold bake sales, pancakes days, noodle drives, dances, raffles, lob-a choc and sausage sizzles etc to fundraise for worthy causes.  Guest speakers from local charities/not-for profit organisations attend our meetings to enhance student awareness of people less fortunate than themselves and how they can best help serve the community when they leave school.

Some of the charities which Kedron SHS Interact Club has supported, include:

Queensland Children's Hospital, Orange Sky, Wooloowin Community Centre, Ronald McDonald Houses, Clifford House Aged Care, schools and students in Thailand (where we sponsor three students), support/provide funding after natural disasters (eg. Floods, bushfires and earthquakes), Aspect (Autism), Mycah Projects & Wooloowin Community Centre (supporting the homeless), Save the Children Foundation, Water Projects in Sudan, Humour Foundation (Clown Doctors), Cancer Research, Birthing Kits, St Vincent DePaul and the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Doctors without Borders, Donations in Kind, Compassion 4 Community, Days for Girls, solar lights for energy poverty nations etc.

Sport

Every student has the opportunity to participate in Sport at Kedron. Inter-school sport is available via a weekly competition for all students in Years 8 - 12. Year 7 students participate in inter-house competitions on Friday afternoons with the emphasis being on skill development, teamwork and participation. Our sporting facilities are extensive and well-maintained with expansive ovals, multi-purpose courts, and a large indoor Sports Centre with fully equipped gym.

Students are also offered the opportunity to take part in the popular after-school sport program, which provides a voluntary, recreational and fun environment for students to get active and play sport whilst being supervised by our highly qualified staff.

Kedron Umbrella Project

An important group in promoting the school's value of Diversity, the Kedron Umbrella Project (KUP) plays a vital role in promoting inclusivity through the pillars of gender equality, LGBTIQ+ rights, cultural diversity and religious diversity. Throughout the year, the KUP team is responsible for running events, educational activities and forms a supportive environment for students from a variety of backgrounds.
