Technology

Students at Kedron State High School have access to over 200 computers, located in 6 labs, pods and a class pod in the library. Others are also available in the Learning Support area, the Hearing Impaired Unit and the International students' rooms.

These computers are capable of running the latest software and students are finding more and more ways to incorporate ICTs in their learning, ranging from presentations for assignments through to using and creating webquests. Students are also being exposed more and more to the use of scanners, digital cameras and other equipment. All labs have ceiling mounted data projectors and the school is gradually introducing Interactive Whiteboards to encourage student participation and engagement.

The student network runs with Windows 2003 (server) and the workstations operate under Windows XP. Security levels are high, meaning students can safely store their files without them being copied by others. Staff can create documents for student use in a general area.

The school runs an Intranet that allows staff to quickly make bookings in computer labs and the multimedia room, have access to common documents that can be used by all teachers, quickly connect to their webmail accounts and receive announcements.

The student Intranet page provides quick links to webmail and to search engines for research. Students have access to computers during lesson time and at least one computer laboratory is open at lunchtime on two days each week. The library, with 25 computers, is open before and after school and at lunch times as well.

Students and parents are required to sign a Network and Internet Acceptable Use Policy before students are allocated a username and password for the school computer network and Internet. Students are also allocated a school email address which can be accessed from home computers at ce.eq.edu.au (There is no www at the start of this address.) The student's email address is This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Students are encouraged to use USB drives or email to transport files between home and school. Students do not have access to other email accounts such as hotmail and Yahoo through the school network. The school currently runs Office 2003, which cannot read documents created with Office 2007. Students should remember to save files at home as the 2003 version if they wish to use them at school.
