To access a copy of the Kedrons SHS Assessment / Assignment Policy Guide click here. The Senior Schooling Department at Kedron SHS focuses on assisting students to make informed choices as they move from school to university, TAFE or the workforce. For many students this can be by combining school with university or TAFE study or through vocational training in the workplace. Additionally Senior Schooling prepares Year 12 students for the Queensland Core Skills (QCS) test, helps students achieve a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and assists Year 10 student to prepare their Student Education and Training Plan (SETP).
The Senior Studies Handbook explains in detail student subject choices for Year 11 at Kedron State High School.
School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SATs) School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships allow a student to commence work with an employer and study their trade at TAFE while still studying at school. Students are paid for the time that they work and will reduce the length of their apprenticeship by successfully completing their SAT. Student’s timetables are adjusted to reflect the demands of work and vocational training. More detailed information can found at http://www.apprenticeshipsinfo.qld.gov.au/
Student Education Training Plans (SET Plans) SET Plans are the culmination of the career unit studied by all of our Year 10 students in Semester One. They help students structure their learning around their abilities, interests and ambitions. As part of the planning process, students think about their future, consider their abilities and investigate their options for careers and further education. Parents and students attend a SET Plan interview with a career education teacher during Term Three.
The QCE is a qualification awarded to students on the achievement of a range of minimum standards. It has replaced the Queensland Senior Certificate. To achieve a QCE a student must have at least 20 credits in the required pattern, and fulfil the literacy and numeracy requirements. Obtaining a QCE demonstrates that a student has achieved their objectives in the Senior School regardless of the pathway they have selected. In the future, this qualification will be sought by employer groups. Subjects are equally weighted reflecting the fact that the QCE is a reward for students who have successfully completed the subjects that they studied. The QCE has no bearing on OP scores or Tertiary entry. Students have seven years from the completion of Year 12 to achieve the credits necessary for a QCE. More information can be found at http://www.qsa.qld.edu.au/certificates/3180.html
While studying Years 10, 11 and 12, students have the option of studying a number of TAFE courses through the TAFE in Schools Program. These will be advertised to students throughout the year. The qualifications that students gain are nationally recognised and the courses cost significantly less than the price paid by adult learners.
Students have the option of commencing university study in the Senior School through the various universities early entry programs. Students need to have demonstrated the capacity to be successful at tertiary level to be considered. Interested students should speak to the guidance officer regarding courses that are available.
The Queensland Core Skills Test (QCS) is a four paper test taken by Year 12 students in August / September.
