2010 Music Scholarship Applications Are Available Now!!
In 2010 Kedron SHS will once again be providing music scholarships for Instrumental Music students entering Years 8 and Year 10.
The Middle School Scholarships will provide two Instrumental Music students in Year 8 with funding for private music tuition to the value of $1000 ($500 per year in Years 8 and 9).
The Senior School Scholarships for two Instrumental Music students in Year 10, will provide funding for private music tuition to the value of $1500 ($500 per year in Years 10 – 12).
Instrumental Music students of all performance levels, including those who have not completed private exams, are encouraged to apply as scholarship recipients are not selected according to a minimum level achievement. The examiners are looking for overall musicianship, a willingness to learn, enthusiasm, and dedication to both their lessons and ensemble rehearsals. Please note, preference may be given to less common instruments e.g. double bass and tuba, although this will be dependant on the applications received and the instruments required for Kedron SHS ensembles in 2010
Applications are available to download here.

Middle School Applications close Friday 30 October

CLASSROOM MUSIC

The Year 8 – 12 Classroom Music program is a comprehensive course that develops a student’s ability to read, write, listen to and perform a broad range of music.
Year 8 Music is offered on a trimester basis for all students. The curriculum is very practical allowing students to experience the elements of music and music theory through studies in keyboard, guitar and drum kit.
Year 9 is a one semester elective course through which students expand upon the Year 8 experience. Contemporary popular music and music from other cultures are explored through listening, composing and performing.
Year 10 is a two semester elective course which focuses on developing the students’ level of skill through listening to a broad range of repertoire, singing and playing, reading and writing music.
Years 11 – 12 is an elective subject that covers the four semester Queensland Studies Authority (QSA) Senior Music course. Each term students explore a broad range of musical styles, genres and conventions – including: World Music, Musical Genius, Songwriting and the history of the popular song and the purposes of Music in society.
In addition to Senior Music, students in Year 12 have the opportunity to participate in the QSA Music Extension performance course targeted at high achieving young instrumentalists, vocalists, composers, conductors and musicologists. To be eligible for this course, students must have completed the two semesters of Year 11 Music.

VOCAL MUSIC PROGRAM
Vocal performance opportunities are provided in all Classroom and Extension Music courses. In addition to this, students have the opportunity to participate in Kedron Singers, a large mixed vocal group that performs at key events throughout the year. Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 Classroom Music are automatically involved in Kedron Singers.

GUITAR WORKSHOPS
Students in the classroom music program develop many of their performing skills using the acoustic guitar. Guitarists looking for additional learning opportunities can participate in either of the weekly workshops offered in the music block for beginner and advanced guitarists.

MUSIC BLOCK
To support all of these courses and programs, the music block is staffed at lunch time each day to enable students the opportunity for informal individual or group practice, including weekly beginner and advanced guitar workshops.
