The central focus of Home Economics is the wellbeing of people within their personal, family, community and work roles. Home Economics is an interdisciplinary study drawing on the fields of nutrition and dietetics; textiles and fashion; architecture and the built environment; and human development, relationships and behaviours.
Staff:
The Department is staffed by 3 full-time dedicated and experienced teachers, all of whom teach a range of junior and senior subjects. The senior Hospitality teachers also possess recognised industry qualifications to support and promote industry practices.
ICTs:
ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) are an integral part of the Home Economics Department, both in pedagogical practices and student learning.
Facilities:
• Junior Kitchen.
• Senior Kitchen with industrial gas stoves. A variety of commercial equipment has also been purchased to promote industry practices.
• Coffee Shop Area with Gaggia espresso machine, industrial dishwasher, and stainless steel benches.
• Junior Textiles Room.
• Senior Learning Centre with data projector, laptop, and interactive white board.
Kedron Coffee Shop:
Kedron Coffee is run by the Senior Hospitality students every morning tea. Students work on a two bar Gaggia machine to produce coffees and other hot beverages of industry standard. A range of cold beverages including milkshakes and frappes are also available.
Involvement in School Activities:
Throughout the course of the year, the Home Economics department is involved in a number of additional activities which support the curriculum including:
o Work placement for hospitality students
o External courses at Kedron Wavell Services Club
o Excursions which support and enhance the curriculum
Middle School Curriculum:
In year 8 students study a foundation unit covering basic textile construction and food preparation. Practical lessons occur on a weekly basis. Students are able to complete individual design projects using both mediums on completion of this unit.
In year 9 and 10 students have the opportunity to further develop skills and knowledge in both Food Technology and Home Economics. By choosing either one of these subjects students will develop a knowledge of nutrition, food and textile skills, task and resource management skills, and project presentation skills. Junior subject choices can be explored further by reading the subject handbook.
Senior School Curriculum
In year 11 and 12 students have the choice of the following subjects:
Home Economics (Contributes to OP and QCE) – A subject that will prepare students for a variety of career paths, and teaches skills for successful and sustainable living in an ever changing world.
Hospitality Studies (Contributes to OP and QCE) – An academic subject with some practical components. This subject will prepare students for careers in management particularly in the Hospitality industry. Certificate I in Hospitality is also embedded into the course.
Hospitality (Contributes to QCE) – A practical based subject preparing students for the hands on world of food and beverage preparation and service. This subject is divided into two distinct years. Year 11 focuses on fundamental skills of both back and front of house while Year 12 focuses on the completion of Certificate I in Hospitality. More detailed information about these subjects is available through the senior handbook.
