English

English is a subject studied by all students at Kedron. English is used by most Australians to communicate with others in our culturally diverse communities. As a major international language, it has power and influence in global, national and local contexts.

Students should recognise the fundamental role that English plays in much of our personal communication and its importance in the teaching and learning process in all subjects.

Proficiency in English enables students to share in and contribute to current and future local, national and global communities and cultures.

In the senior years (11 and 12), students may study either Senior English or English Communication.

Junior English is studied in the middle years (8, 9, and 10). Classes are arranged in ability groupings: Extension, Main Stream, Literacy and Learning Support. Modifications are made to the common curriculum in accordance with the needs and abilities of students within these groupings.

In English courses in the middle years, students work with the five language modes: reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing. Courses are organised in units (two per semester) around a set of language contexts and social purposes.

Senior English is studied by a majority of students in years 11 and 12 and is the preferred option for those seeking OP eligibility. The current program is based on the 2002 syllabus. Students engage with a wide range of classic and contemporary texts including examples drawn from the mass media. Students explore textual features, contextual factors and the personal and cultural dimensions of texts.

English Communication emphasizes a functional and communicative approach to language use with a focus on workplace texts and popular culture.

Staffing
Our English staff typically numbers fifteen teachers with a wide range of interests and expertise. Teachers of English often share their teaching allocation with another subject. Combinations involving the Social Sciences are the most common.

The current Head of Department is Mr Kerry O'Neill.
